CLU's History Lecture Series - Contagion! “The Black Death in the Late Middle Ages”

The COVID-19 pandemic renewed interest in the global history of infectious diseases. This year’s lecture series presented by History Department faculty and other experts focuses on different periods in world history when societies faced pandemics and their consequences. In the first lecture, assistant professor of history Samuel Claussen, PhD, will address the bubonic plague and its impact on the late Middle Ages, from the 14th to the 16th centuries.

Javier Saucedo of Ventura County’s Green Business Program will visit the Ojai Library at 2pm on Friday, September 10, to explain and demonstrate the contents of the DIY Home Energy Savings Toolkits currently available for lending from Ventura County Library locations.

Local Ojai resident Anagarika Sucinno will visit the Ojai Library at 2pm on Sunday, September 26, to offer the first of a series of talks entitled Karma and the End of Karma: Unweaving the Karma Complexity. Two subsequent talks will take place on Sunday, October 10, and Sunday, October 24, also at 2pm. 

There is much confusion and contradiction around the concept of karma. Questions of Being, free will, good and bad, life, and rebirth.

One County, One Book CLU Panel Discussion

University faculty and staff members will discuss the themes of Steph Cha’s book Your House Will Pay. The novel illuminates racial tensions in Los Angeles by following two families in crisis — one Korean American, one African American — who are grappling with the effects of a decades-old crime. The book explores race, class and community while sparking hope for the possibility of connection and mutual understanding.
