Baden Powell Trail (Joel's Journeys #3)

Looking north toward Antelope Valley

Mt. Baden-Powell is the second highest mountain in the San Gabriel Mountain Range north of Los Angeles. The trail to the top of Mt. Baden Powell begins at Vincent Gap just off Angeles Crest Highway. The best way to get to Vincent Gap during early morning hours is to use the 210 Freeway to I-15 north, exit to 138 and then turn left (west) when you get to Angeles Crest Highway, CA-2.  Drive 14 miles west to Vincent Gap. The trail to the top is 4 miles long with a 2,800 elevation gain taking you from 6,500 feet to 9,400 feet. The best time of the year to use the trail is late May to early July, when there is still some snow on the trail—but not too much! There are excellent views from the trail looking north towards Antelope Valley and south towards the highest peak in the range, Mt. San Antonio, aka “Baldy” (10,064 feet). My suggested route back is to take the 138 west towards Palmdale instead of driving back to Interstate 15. Then take the 14 Freeway back to Santa Clarita. This route back will also allow you to visit Vasquez Rocks County Park where some Star Trek scenes were filmed. It should avoid a lot of Los Angeles County traffic and make it possible to get back to Ventura County by evening.
