Ventura County Library encourages families to “Find Your Voice” and participate in Summer Reading!

The Ventura County Library (VCL) Summer Reading Challenge is scheduled to begin on May 15th, 2023.  There are a wide range of themed events scheduled at the VCL branches, in addition to the regular Storytime and special events programs. Families are encouraged to stop by their local VCL branch to participate in themed bi-weekly STEAM activities and challenges and other subjects related to this year’s theme “Find Your Voice”.

VCL encourages the love of reading with a range of free activities for children, teens, and adults throughout the summer. Summer is a wonderful time to explore a variety of topics or learn about a new hobby with books available from VCL. This initiative helps keep youth and families engaged in a range of critical thinking and skill building, and fun throughout the summer months to avoid the summer slide.

Participants may register at vencolibrary.beanstack.org and record their reading with opportunities to win prizes for reaching reading goals. Once again VCL will give away 13 Nintendo Switch Grand Prizes as well as other STEAM prizes throughout the summer to readers who reach various reading challenge goals. Youth may visit their local branch to choose a free new book to add to their personal collections, once they log 500 minutes of reading. There will be a special featured program with bilingual Magician Zany Zoe and an end of summer party with Kona Ice.

“Summer Learning Loss is significant for many children, with some forgetting 50% or more of what they learn during the school year by the end of the summer. For some that loss is even more extreme because it compounds from summer to summer. Summer Learning Loss can also be a predictor of negative outcomes later in life like not finishing high school or attending college. What we know can help mitigate that loss of learning in all subjects, across a diverse array of populations, is reading every day during the summer. That’s a big part of why we have the summer reading challenge at Ventura County Library. We also know it’s summer, and we want local kids to come to our libraries not only to read, but also to have fun and connect with other kids. We hope kids and their families will join us for the Summer Reading Challenge and all the great activities that go along with it!” said Molly Krill, Youth Services Manager.

VCL offers so much for families during the summer months when children are out of school. There are activities for the entire family. Come into a VCL branch and explore, discover, connect…and “find your voice” in a book or activity. Registration continues through August 4th, 2023. To learn more about the summer reading adventure at the library, please call your local branch or view the library’s website at vencolibrary.org. How will you “Find Your Voice” this summer?

This program is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Molly Krill, Ventura County Library Youth Services Manager at (805) 677-7170
