Dr. Mary-Alice Daniel will visit the Orvene S. Carpenter Community Center from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, April 27, 2024, to host a poetry workshop entitled, “Lines From Within: Poetry From the Inside Out.”
This generative poetry workshop and craft laboratory will help attendees create a signature style in their writing, find their comfort zone and how to write inside and outside of it, nurture originality, defeat writer’s block, and help develop an individual writing practice.
Mary-Alice Daniel was born near the Niger/Nigeria border, then raised in England and Tennessee. Mass for Shut-Ins, her first book of poetry, won the 117th Yale Younger Poets Prize and was released in 2023. In 2022, her tri-continental memoir, A Coastline Is an Immeasurable Thing (HarperCollins/Ecco), was People’s Book of the Week and one of Kirkus Reviews’ Best Nonfiction Books of the Year. An alumna of Yale University (BA) and the University of Michigan (MFA), she received her PhD from the University of Southern California. Thereafter, she began a postdoctoral fellowship at Brown University and served as the inaugural Visiting Writer-in-Residence at Washington University in St. Louis. A Cave Canem Fellow, she turns to her third and fourth books of poetry and prose. She holds the 2024 Mary Routt Endowed Chair of Writing at Scripps College.

La Dra. Mary-Alice Daniel visitará el Centro Comunitario Orvene S. Carpenter de 1 p. m. a 3 p. m. el sábado 27 de abril de 2024 para organizar un taller de poesía titulado "Líneas desde adentro: poesía desde adentro hacia afuera".
